(Redwood City, CA) Mark Church, San Mateo County Chief Elections Officer & Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder, announced today the opening of the candidate filing period for the June 2, 2026 Statewide Direct Primary Election.

For candidates seeking elected office, the filing period opens at 8 a.m. on February 9, 2026, and closes at 5 p.m. on March 6, 2026. For offices in which no eligible incumbent has filed for re-election, the candidate filing period will be extended by five (5) calendar days and will close at 5 p.m. on March 11, 2026. Candidates may file in person or submit a written request to receive candidate filing documents electronically.

“San Mateo County’s success is built on leaders who dedicate themselves to public service and the communities they represent,” said Church. “Serving in public office is both an honor and a responsibility, and an opportunity to help shape the future of our county.”

  • U.S. Representative in Congress, District 16: 2-year term

  • Governor: 4-year term

  • Lieutenant Governor: 4-year term

  • Attorney General: 4-year term

  • Secretary of State: 4-year term

  • Controller: 4-year term

  • Treasurer: 4-year term

  • Insurance Commissioner: 4-year term

  • State Board of Equalization, 2nd District: 4-year term

  • State Assembly, District 19: 2-year terms

  • State Assembly, District 21: 2-year terms  

  • State Assembly, District 23: 2-year terms

State Office: Non-Partisan

  • State Superintendent of Public Instruction: 4-year term

County Offices: Non-Partisan

  • Superior Court Judge, 9 seats available: 6-year terms

  • Board of Supervisors, 2nd District: 4-year term

  • Board of Supervisors, 3rd District: 4-year term

  • Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder: 4-year term

  • Controller: 4-year term

  • Coroner: 4-year term

  • Treasurer-Tax Collector: 4-year term

  • County Superintendent of Schools: 4-year term

Early Voting Period Begins May 4, 2026
All registered San Mateo County voters will receive a vote-by-mail ballot in May 2026. Three Vote Centers will open for in-person voting beginning May 4, 2026, with additional Vote Centers opening through Election Day.
