(Redwood City, CA) Mark Church, Chief Elections Officer and Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder, announced today that the filing period for write-in candidates for the November 5, 2024, Presidential General Election will open on Monday, September 9, 2024. Eligible individuals interested in running as write-in candidates must submit a Statement of Write-In Candidacy, along with the required documentation, by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.

Write-in candidacy documents for county, school, and special district elections must be filed at the San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division, located at 40 Tower Road, San Mateo. City write-in candidates are required to submit their paperwork to their respective City Clerk’s office.

County, school, and special district candidates can initiate the filing process by requesting a registration form via email at CandidateServices@smcacre.gov. Candidates may also obtain the form by scheduling an appointment, walking in, or completing it in person. The completed form can be returned by email to CandidateServices@smcacre.gov.

Once the form is received, our office will contact the write-in candidate to arrange an electronic or in-person filing appointment to finalize the process.

Potential write-in candidates must submit a Statement of Write-In Candidacy, which includes the candidate’s name, residential address, the office they are running for, and the specific election date. Additionally, they must file a Statement of Economic Interests (Form 700). No filing fee is required.

Information about qualified write-in candidates, including their names, will not appear on voter materials such as the Official Ballot or the Sample Ballot & Official Voter Information Pamphlet. However, the Roster of Candidates, which is updated daily, includes qualified write-in candidates and can be viewed online at smcacre.gov. Additionally, a list of qualified write-in candidates will be available at Vote Centers starting Saturday, October 26.

Early Voting Period Begins October 7 to November 4, 2024 
San Mateo County's registered voters will be mailed their ballot in October 2024. Three Vote Centers will be open for in-person voting starting on October 7, 2024, through Election Day. Additional Vote Centers will open on October 26 and November 2.
